Gemological Consulting

There are a wide variety of reasons to want to engage us for a Gemological Consultation – anything from assisting in the purchase of an important piece of jewelry to “What is this green rock?”  A consultation can be verbal or written.  We will discuss your needs and customize the consultation to your specific needs.

Common consultations include:

Pre-Purchase diamond consultation for an engagement ring or other significant piece of jewelry:

No matter how much you read about “the Four C’s” (Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut), the prospect of choosing a diamond can be daunting.  Client’s ask, “What’s more important, color or clarity, to get a sparkly diamond?”.  (In reality, it’s neither!  Cut grade is more of a determining factor of how “sparkly” a diamond can be).  “Do I buy at a jewelry store or on-line?”.  “Do I go with a natural diamond or a laboratory grown diamond?”.  “What do all these laboratory report measurements mean?”.  Lots of choices – all with pro’s and con’s.  Each consultation is customized to your needs and experience, with the goal of confidently purchasing the diamond of your partner’s dreams.

Post-Purchase diamond and gemstone verification:

If you have already purchased a piece of jewelry, but want to make sure that the gemstones you thought you purchased were the ones that you actually received, then we can help.  Gemstone testing, verification of laboratory grading reports, and identification of treatments, when possible, are ways we can help independently verify the jewelry item you purchased.  A common question during these consultations is, “Did I get a good deal?”  We can help you with this as well.

Jewelry and gemstone identification and separation:

Perhaps you have just inherited a shoe box full of jewelry.  “What’s real?”.  “What’s costume jewelry?”.  “Is it gold or just gold-plated?”.  “Is that big stone a diamond or CZ?”.  This is another excellent time for a consultation.  We quickly work through your items to answer these common questions and more.  Depending on what you have, the next question frequently is, “What’s it worth?”.  Not every item may need an appraisal document, but we can work together prioritize the items and your needs.  After the consultation, you will have a better idea of what you own and you will have accurate information on which you can make decisions – keep it, sell it, or give it away.
